Why Go Back When You’ve Been Set Free?

Oct 5, 2025    Pastor Steven Pettis Jr

As we begin our verse-by-verse journey through Galatians 5, this opening message calls us to stand firm in the freedom Christ has already secured for us. Freedom isn’t a feeling or a phase; it’s the result of God’s redeeming grace. But even those who have been set free can be tempted to return to the yoke of slavery of legalism, self-effort, and religious performance.

In this sermon, Pastor Pettis unpacks the spiritual contrast between walking by the Spirit and striving in the flesh. Through Paul’s powerful use of the story of Hagar and Sarah, we’re warned about the danger of producing what God only intended for us to receive by faith. True freedom doesn’t lead us to self-autonomy; it leads us to Spirit-dependence.

If you’ve ever struggled with waiting on God, if you’ve been tempted to “help Him out,” or if you’re weary from trying to produce spiritual outcomes in your own strength, this message is for you. Don’t go back to what God already delivered you from. You are a child of promise. Walk in that freedom.
