14 Day Fast: Day 1

Scripture:
“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes…” — Proverbs 6:16–17a (ESV)

Devotional:
As we begin this fast, we must start with the root of pride. It’s not just a personal issue; it’s a fellowship issue. Imagine a guest walking into your home and immediately rearranging the furniture, telling your family how to live, and criticizing your leadership. That’s what pride does in the church. It walks into the house that Christ built with His blood and tries to take ownership. Pride says, “My way is better.” Humility says, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”Solomon tells us that haughty eyes — a posture of pride and superiority — are detestable to God. Why? Because they reflect a heart that sees itself above others… and worse, above Christ.

Haughty eyes in the church look like division, entitlement, selfish ambition, and refusing correction. Pride reshapes the fellowship into our image, not His. And that’s the issue: this isn’t our house this is His church. We didn’t die for it. He did.

Repent today for the ways pride has shown up in your attitude, your service, or even your silence.

Ask yourself:
  • Have I exalted my ideas above the Word?
  • Have I refused to listen or submit to spiritual authority?
  • Have I made church about my preferences, not His presence?
Let’s confess the pride that has harmed the fellowship and commit to walking in humility — honoring one another and submitting to Christ’s headship in all things.

Takeaway for Today:
Christ must be exalted — not us. Let go of pride. Enter His house with reverence, not arrogance.

Prayer:
Lord, we repent. We’ve made Your church about us — our plans, our egos, our comfort. Forgive us for walking into Your house with haughty eyes and self-exalting hearts. Help us to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand. Remind us daily that this fellowship exists to glorify You. May our pride be replaced with reverence, our entitlement with gratitude, and our arrogance with surrender. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
